The Beginner’s Guide to the Bible

A warm, no-jargon journey through God’s Word
with Pastor Jr Abel Isaac Glory

Hello, beloved friend.

Welcome to Abel’s Altar — not just another Bible study, but a place where we sit together at the feet of Jesus and let the Word speak for itself.

I wrote this guide for you: whether you’ve never opened the Bible before, you’ve tried and felt lost, or you’ve been walking with the Lord for years but want a fresh big-picture view. No preaching. No complicated church words. Just honest, Spirit-filled conversation about the most important book ever written.

“By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice...”
— Hebrews 11:4

THIS WEEK’S FOUNDATION
"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness..."
— 2 Timothy 3:16

What Exactly Is the Bible?

The word “Bible” simply means "books". It’s not one single book that dropped from heaven — it’s a beautiful library of 66 sacred books written over 1,500 years by more than 40 different authors.

Think of it like a family album that tells one continuous love story: God’s pursuit of a people who would know Him and love Him.

Two main parts:
• The Old Testament (39 books) — The story of God and Israel • The New Testament (27 books) — The story of Jesus and His Church

Where Did the Bible Come From?

1
It began with real people in a real place

Around 2000–1000 BC, God called a man named Abraham and promised to make his descendants a blessing to the whole world. That family became the nation of Israel in the land we now call Israel.

2
King David & the Golden Years

Around 1000 BC, David captured Jerusalem and made it the capital. His son Solomon built the first Temple. This was the high point of Israel’s history — but it didn’t last.

3
Exile & Return

Because of sin and idolatry, Israel was taken captive by Babylon in 586 BC. The Temple was destroyed. Years later, God miraculously brought them home under Persian King Cyrus. They rebuilt the Temple and gathered their sacred writings.

The Full Library Comes Together

By the time of Jesus, the Old Testament was complete. After Jesus rose and the Church was born, the Holy Spirit inspired the apostles to write the New Testament letters and Gospels. By the 4th century, the 66 books we have today were recognized as the complete Bible.

So… What Is the Bible Actually About?

The entire Bible is one big story: God creating everything good → humanity rebelling → God promising a Rescuer → Jesus arriving as that Rescuer → the Church being sent to tell the world → and one day Jesus returning to make everything new again.

It’s not a rule book. It’s not a history textbook.
It’s a love letter written in blood and fire.

Your Altar Moments This Week

1. If the Bible is God’s love letter to you, which part of the story feels most personal right now?
2. What is one thing you’ve always wondered about the Bible? Write it down and bring it to God in prayer.
3. This week, read just one chapter from the Gospels (start with John 1). What did the Holy Spirit highlight for you?
Write your answers in a journal — this is holy ground.

Let’s Pray Together

Heavenly Father,
Open my eyes to see wonderful things in Your Word.
Give me a heart like Abel — ready to bring You my very best.
Let every page I read draw me closer to Jesus.
Amen.

— Say this prayer every time you open the Bible —
